OUR DISTRICT COMMUNITY
Bedford-Stuyvesant is a community experiencing gentrification. As one walks through the community you can see and hear the “buzz” of renovation, new businesses, and changing demographics which provide a new backdrop for this growing community.
Community School District 16 is one of three community school districts in Brooklyn that cover portions of Bedford-Stuyvesant, however we in District 16 think of Community School District 16 as the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Street names in Bedford-Stuyvesant hold historical significance; streets such as Bainbridge, Chauncey, Decatur and McDonough are named after naval heroes from several wars including the War of 1812. History tells us that in the early 1800’s two separate communities, Stuyvesant Heights and Brooklyn & Bedford came together to form what we now know as Bedford-Stuyvesant. It is a community with an eclectic touch and is historically known for its beautiful, magnificent brownstones and two to three family townhouses.
