Building The Future

Community Education Councils give parents a powerful voice in shaping the policies and priorities of New York City schools. Members of the Community Education Councils and 4 Citywide Councils advise the Chancellor on a range of matters, work directly with the district superintendents, review district educational programs, approve zoning lines and make recommendations on capital improvements in order to make our public schools the best they can be.

NYC’s Community Education Councils are constituted every two years (in odd years) according to rules set by state law. The three mandatory officers (president, treasurer, recording secretary) of PA/PTAs vote for the parent members as part of the state-mandated selection process. There are also members who are appointed by the Borough Presidents and the Public Advocate. The selected candidates and appointed members then serve a two-year term than begins on July 1st of the selection year.
